GLBT History Month: 31 Days, 31 Icons

GLBT celebrates history month in October

A first lady, a children’s storybook author, a youth activist and a trail-blazing photographer. These are just some of the icons recognized during the GLBT’s 2010 history month.

The GLBT, which stands for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people, celebrates their history month in October. The slogan is “31 Days. 31 Icons.” Icons can be nominated by anyone and are chosen for their great achievements in the field, as a national hero or for their contributions to the GLBT civil rights movement.

According to the GLBT web site, the organization chose October in the 1990’s because, “public schools are in session and traditions, such as National Coming Out Day, occur then.” The month strives to educate others about the GLBT heritage, role models and to expand their community both nationally and internationally.
