It's a tragic start to the Thanksgiving holiday after three middle school students were hit by a car while they walked home from school.

One boy is fighting for his life and two others are recovering in serious, but stable condition at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

The accident occurred around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Hampden and Marshall Roads in Upper Darby, Pa., police said.

The three kids were walking home from Beverly Hills Middle School when a grey Dodge Charger sped down Marshall Road and into the students, police said. They had been dismissed early for the holiday break.

Seventh grader Victoria Olds was walking with the three boys when the accident happened. She said the car hit the kids so hard that her friend Jamal Brunswick was knocked out of his shoes.

"She was speeding, like really fast, and then they were coming down this to cross the street and when they were crossing the street they hit her and they flew," Olds said. "Jamal was in the middle of the street and she kept going."

The driver, a 42-year old woman, then attempted to flee the scene hitting a parked Subaru, but was stopped about a block away, police said.

Investigators took a blood sample from the woman to determine if she was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident, but Upper Darby Police Supt. Michael Chitwood said speed was a factor.

"Obviously, it was reckless and certainly she tried to get away," Chitwood said. "It was felonious. So she’s locked up right now."
