3 Guards Dismissed Over Prison Beating

Authorities say guards took part in the beating of a prisoner

Three guards at an eastern Pennsylvania prison have been dismissed after authorities said they took part in the beating of a prisoner.

The prison board took action Wednesday after reviewing the results of a Pottsville police investigation.

Police say the guards entered 23-year-old Brandon Moyer's cell on April 7 and started a physical altercation without justification. Moyer suffered a fractured left eye and significant bruising.

Twenty-seven-year-old James Preneta of Shenandoah was charged last week with misdemeanor assault and harassment. Two other guards, 55-year-old John Yeager and 37-year-old Michael Galavage, both of Pottsville, each face a charge of harassment.

The Republican-Herald newspaper of Pottsville reports that two other guards at Schuylkill County Prison have been suspended in connection with the beating.
