TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- New Jersey lawmakers are insisting the state's public four-year colleges keep tuition hikes low this year. A provision in the proposed state budget calls for any school that boosts tuition by more than 3 percent to lose its share of federal stimulus money.
The federal government is sending New Jersey $32 million to ease tuition increases.
There are additional catches for the colleges. They must maintain funding levels for programs that help disadvantaged students, for one.
Lawmakers would make the colleges exempt from mandatory unpaid employee furloughs as long as they cut personnel costs.
The Legislature is expected to adopt the budget this week.
