2 Teens Charged in Store Owner's Murder

Authorities have arrested two 17-year-old boys in the shooting death of a Newark store owner during a robbery attempt.

Essex County prosecutors and Newark police said Friday the teens, both from Newark, were charged in the Oct. 27 death of 41-year-old Joseph Flagg of Union. Their names were not released because they are juveniles. Prosecutors said the state might seek to try them as adults.

Police Director Samuel A. DeMaio said Flagg tried to help young people in the community and one of his alleged assailants was someone Flagg had "reached out to in a positive way.''

The teenagers were charged with felony murder, robbery, and other crimes. One of the boys was also charged with knowing and purposeful murder. They were sent to the Essex County Youth Detention Facility.
