Man Arrested in Connection With Gym Shooting

Men shot on gym's indoor basketball courts

Police arrested a 25-year-old Bala Cynwyd man on attempted murder charges in connection with two shootings that happened during an indoor basketball game at a crowded gym in Northeast Philadelphia Tuesday night.

Mujahid Muhammad, of the 100 block of Montgomery Avenue in Bala Cynwyd was arrested Tuesday night.

Two men were shot during the 7:45 p.m. mele at World Gym on Roosevelt Boulevard. Muhammad is one of five men who fled the scene after the shootings, according to police.

Dozens of people were taking part in a basketball game on one of the gym's indoor courts.

"The argument started during and over a basketball game, which escalated into a fight, then turned into a shooting," Chief Insp. Scott Small.

One of the victims was shot in the chest and the other was hit in the chest and face. They were in stable condition Wednesday morning.

Eyewitnesses said it was pure chaos as gym patrons rushed to get out of the building during the shootout.

"We're very fortunate that there were not more individuals injured," Chief Insp. Small said.

The five suspects jumped into a black Buick sedan with tinted windows and took off, according to police.

Police pulled over that same car later at Adams Avenue and the Roosevelt Boulevard.

That's when Muhammad was arrested. The four other suspects ran. Police were still looking for them Wednesday morning.

Muhammad is charged with attempted murder, criminal conspiracy, aggravated assault and other related offenses.
