2 Local Servicemen Killed in Ga. Plane Crash

Plane went down in woods during training exercise Monday

Two local men were killed after their Navy airplane crashed into the woods in north Georgia.

Navy Ensign Zachary Eckhart, 25, of Orefield, Pa. and Marine Lt. Shawn Nice, 26, of Levittown, Pa. were among four men riding in a Navy T-39N near the Georgia-Tennesee-North Carolina border when the plane went down around 2 p.m. Monday, officials said.

The crew was taking part in a training exercise when the crash occurred. The plane narrowly missed a home when it glided into the trees in Fannin County, Ga., officials said.

The plane was based out of the Pensacola Naval Air Station. Officials plan to hold a closed memorial service for the men Friday.

Eckhart was a graduate of Northwestern Lehigh High School and Virginia Tech. Nice, who was originally from Levittown, leaves behind a wife.

Family members for the men were unavailable for comment Wednesday.
