Cops Suspect Drunk Driving in Deadly Crash

Wreck kills two passengers but the driver survives

A 20-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving early Friday morning after she lost control of her vehicle and crashed her SUV into a pole, killing two passengers.

The Samantha Pond who appeared intoxicated suffered no injuries, police said.

One passenger was pronounced dead in the vehicle after the 2 a.m. crash on Byberry Road in the Somerton section of Philadelphia. The second passenger was ejected from the car and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.

The passengers were indentified as 22-year-old Caitlin Hennessey of Upper Moreland Township and 21-year-old Melissa Lees of Fishtown.

The white SUV containing three women was speeding just before the crash, police said. The impact of the crash sent the SUV spinning into a rock wall and ripped off one of the car doors.

No one is the car appeared to be wearing seatbelts, according to investigators.

Pond was taken to Frankford-Torresdale Hospital. Charges are pending toxicology results, police said.
