15-Year-Old Earthquake Survivor Drowns in Berks Co.

The teen was living with his aunt when he drowned in Blue Marsh Lake Wednesday afternoon.

A 15-year-old boy, who came to Berks County after surviving last year's deadly earthquake in Haiti drowned after jumping into the Blue Marsh Lake on Wednesday.

Shortly before 2:30 p.m., rescue crews were called to the lake where Rood Sherac Nerjuste drowned while swimming with friends.

WFMZ reports that Nerjuste was living with his aunt in Sinking Spring, Pa. after being displaced by the the earthquake.

Friends told WFMZ that the 15-year-old used a rope to jump
about 20-feet off shore from the Church Road cliffs when he briefly resurfaced before going under, never to come up again.

Helicopters and local fire departments searched for the boy whose body was found in the water near the cliff, according to the Morning Call.

WFMZ reports that an autopsy is scheduled for Thursday.
