Teen Skateboarder Struck in Hit-and-Run: Cops

A 15-year-old boy is hospitalized with multiple fractures after police say a van struck him while he was skateboarding and then fled the scene

Police are on the hunt for an alleged hit-and-run driver who they say put two teenage boys in the hospital.

And one boy's family is offering a $10,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest of the alleged hit-and-run driver.

On Friday, around 9:40 p.m., police say a 15-year-old boy was riding his bike eastbound on the 200 block of Tomlinson Road in Northeast Philadelphia along the north curb of the westbound lane. Investigators say a minivan traveling westbound hit the bike then swerved into the eastbound lane, striking 15-year-old Matt Coutts of West Pottsgrove while he was riding his skateboard.

The impact threw Coutts several feet across the road into a parked car in front of the 200 block of Tomlinson Road.

The minivan then fled the scene westbound on Tomlinson, according to police.

Matt’s father Edward Coutts says friends of his son claimed the minivan was speeding at the time of the crash. The teen riding the bike was taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries. Coutts, a freshman at Upper Moreland High, suffered road rash, multiple fractures to his arms, legs and shoulder as well as swelling on the brain.

“He broke his left shoulder, dislocated it,” said Edward. “He broke his right wrist pretty bad and his lower leg below the knee was snapped in half.”

Coutts will undergo three surgeries at Children’s Hospital on Monday, according to his father. Edward also says his son was wearing a helmet during the crash which he believes saved his life.

Police say the minivan involved in the hit-and-run may be a Silver Honda Odyssey. It also may have extensive front-end damage.

Coutts' family is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the minivan driver, his aunt tells NBC10.
