Man Dies After Tree Falls on Car

A man was killed Monday after strong winds caused a tree to fall on top of his car.

Narces Mothersil, 54, of Upper Darby, was driving on Sproul Road (Route 320) in Villanova shortly before 5 p.m. Monday when a tree fell over and struck his vehicle, crushing the roof. After the car was struck by the tree, it continued traveling south on Sproul Road and crossed into the northbound lane, striking a vehicle traveling north on Sproul.

Police, firefighters and medics quickly arrived at the scene and used hydraulic extrication tools to cut the roof off the car and free Mothersil, who was trapped inside. He was eventually removed and taken to the Paoli Hospital Trauma Center where he later died from the severe head injuries he suffered in the accident.

The driver in the second vehicle was not hurt in the crash.

Police told NBC10 they believe heavy winds and the saturated ground caused the tree to fall. Several other accidents caused by winds and icy roads have been reported throughout the region Monday.

The tree took down two spans of PECO wires when it fell onto the road. PECO and Asplundh tree crews are currently removing the tree and replacing the power lines.

The roadway will be closed at the scene of the crash overnight and through Tuesday morning.
