Wild Turkeys Terrorize Jersey Neighborhood

A group of wild turkeys is wreaking havoc in a Cherry Hill, N.J. neighborhood. The large birds attacked a mother and child Thursday afternoon. NBC Philadelphia photojournalist Bruce Ryan had to step in and help scare the turkeys away.

The turkeys run "afowl" each afternoon near Brookmead Drive. No one knows where the turkeys came from or why they keep coming back.

While their nerves were rattled, the mother and child were not physically hurt.

I live out in Tabernacle, and we have a nice large heard of turkeys that visit each day and are a true pleasure of the pines. This is a perfect habitat for relocation, and I would be pleased to see them released in my own back yard that is surrounded by acres of natural pinelands habitat to join our local turkeys that would be happy to teach them some species appropriate manners. We can all coexsist peacefully here in the heart of the wharton state forest just as God intended. These turkeys have been in our neighborhood all summer. One is the mother & she had 4 babies & now the babies have grown. It was fun when they were small but now they are getting crazy. They sit up on the phone lines in the same place everynight. We've made calls to the township about them in the past week. In the morning they hang around the kids bus stops & chase them. Even the trash guys had to intercede for the kids 3 days ago. All day they cruise our decks & yards, even come right to the front door. I sure hope they can move them to open spaces somewhere away from humans. I have been around them myself and though they are aggressively curious, they won't harm you. Just as a dog or any animal (geese, ducks etc) they will chase you if you run, it is also their way of playing as well, they love the chase game! They don't belong here, but they are certainly not ATTACK turkeys. Cherry Hill is so built up that neighbors have seen deer in their back yard, fox's etc.. they have no place to go, no free land, they prowl the street seeking food that is why they are here. They have no place to go. And lately we have seen kids throwing rocks at them, so if they are at all getting more aggressive, I can see why. People should just leave them be, let the state deal with it instead of poking at them, throwing things at them and upsetting them. They have been in our back yard, and close to me, my daughter, husband, dog, never chased, just curious, came up checked me out, walked around and left. I didn't run, freak out, show fear. And what is more dangerous, gradually walking away from turkeys with your child in your arms?
