DINGMAN'S FERRY, Pa. (AP) -- Authorities in eastern Pennsylvania say a 25-year-old New Jersey man died as he was trying to aid another swimmer in a Pocono Mountain stream.

The Jersey City resident, whose name has not been released, apparently got into trouble sometime before 2 p.m. in Adams Creek in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area.

Officials say 10 people were swimming in a waterfall pool more than two miles up the trail. Deb Nordeen of the National Park Service says the victim was trying to rescue another swimmer in the rain-swollen stream when he drowned. She says his body was submerged for an hour and located by a diver in a spot where the water was 17 feet deep.

Pike county Coroner Kevin Stroyan says it appears to have been "a tragic accident."
