Stick Shift Thwarts Carjacking Attempt

Pizza driver's manual transmission scares off would-be carjackers

Two men tried to rob and carjack a pizza delivery driver in Lehigh Valley early Friday but were foiled by the fact that the Domino’s employee had a car with a manual transmission.

A stick shift was too complicated for the robbers and they ran away without the car, say police.

The delivery driver was headed east on the 1300 block of Broadway in Fountain Hill when she stopped at a red light just after midnight. A man ran up to the car from the rear and grabbed her by the throat and shirt.

The suspect demanded money while a second man tried to open the passenger door.

The driver told police that the men discussed the fact that the car was a stick shift before fleeing on foot.

The men were described as 18 to 25 years old with medium complexions, said police. The woman told police the man who grabbed her was tall and thin and spoke in a heavy Spanish accent, reports the Morning Call. She said the other man was also tall with a thin to medium build.

Investigators did not say whether they escaped with any money from the driver.
