Study says most Philly students are pushed out because of discipline and boredom

Only 57 percent of Philadelphia’s high school students graduate in four years.

A new study released by the organization Youth United for Change is addressing the dropout rate in the city attributing that most students are pushed out due to disciplinary issues and boredom.

The report, titled Pushed Out: Youth Voices on the Dropout Crisis in Philadelphia, surveyed 273 dropouts on why they left and what could have prevented them from leaving.

Details from the study illustrate that more Philadelphia students are “pushed out” versus dropping out reports the Daily News.

There were four major themes found for why Philadelphia students do not finish high school, over 50 percent attribute boredom and engagement, teaching and classroom learning, discipline and climate and out-of-school Issues.

The school district is working closely with student organizations to seriously address issues found in the report according to the Daily News.
