Get ready to ride the rails from Gloucester County to Philadelphia. Governor Corzine is expected to announce plans for one of the state’s largest public transportation infrastructure projects Tuesday in Woodbury, N.J., according to the Gloucester County Times.
For years the Delaware River Port Authority has talked about expanding the line which carries passengers from Camden County to Philadelphia and now the state is kicking in money to make that happen.
And several route suggestions are in play. The State Planning Commission recommended using the Conrail tracks which run through Gloucester City, Woodbury, Pitman and Glassboro, the paper reported. Other plans suggest creating new lines along the medians of routes 55 and 43 into Williamstown.
Most likely the high speed line will branch off in Camden, follow 676 to Gloucester City, go through Brooklawn eventually joining the Conrail tracks that parrallel route 45, according to Ed Kasuba, Director of Corporate Communications for the Delaware River Port Authority.
"The recommended route along an existing rail line, rather than a new line down a highway median will connect older traditional towns, act as a catalyst for centralizing and expanding job growth, reduce highway congestion and counterbalance the forces of sprawl," executive director of New Jersey Future Peter Kasabach told the paper.
The route would serve Glassboro, Pitman, Mantua, Wenonah, Woodbury, Deptford, West Deptford, Westville, Bellmawr, Brooklawn and Gloucester City.
This expansion could be a multi-million dollar project and PATCO was already told they will receive $500 million from the state in funding.
