Convicted former State Sen. Vincent Fumo, has reported to federal prison in Kentucky.

Fumo was sentenced to 55 months for guilty convictions on 139 counts of conspiracy and defrauding the Senate and two non-profits of several million dollars. Fumo, who is appealing his sentence, will serve his time at a low-security facility in Ashland, Ky.

A judge denied motions earlier this month by Fumo's attorney to delay reporting. They argued that it would be too hard on Fumo's fiance and children for him to be that far from home.

Fumo's attorney also filed documents in an effort to get the prison stay shortened. Those documents reveal that Fumo told his doctor he abused alcohol and prescription drugs to get through his trial.

Fumo said he was addicted to Xanax and alcohol and also takes Ambien to sleep and Prozac for depression.

Fumo wanted to be assigned to a prison closer to home to be near his family. He also wanted to attend a drug and alcohol treatment program. Completing that program would have meant a shorter stint behind bars. Both requests were denied.

Prosecutors called the filing deceptive and manipulative.

Media staked outside Fumo's Green Street Mansion Monday morning didn't get a glimpse of Fumo, because he wasn't there. But they did get to see a new For Sale sign go up on the property.
