Democrats Motion to Keep Polls Open Later Denied

A motion filed by the Philadelphia Democratic City Committee to extend hours at city polling places due a transit strike was denied Tuesday.
The request was made by District Attorney candidate Seth Williams concerned the strike would make it harder for people to get out and vote.
Mayor Michael Nutter says he supports the motion because the strike by Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority workers is making it harder for voters to get to and from work.
The motion asks for polling places to stay open for an extra hour, until 9 p.m.
Transport Workers Union Local 234 went on strike at 3 a.m. Tuesday. The strike came with little notice, creating headaches for commuters who rely on SEPTA bus and subway service.
A state Supreme Court seat and other judicial seats are up for grabs in Tuesday's election. Philadelphians will be voting in races for district attorney and city controller.
