Child Rape Suspect Charged

Investigators charge Jose Carrasquillo in assaults against two girls

Philadelphia authorities filed charges Wednesday against Jose Carrasquillo, the man arrested for last week's brutal rape of an 11-year-old Kensington girl on her way to school.

Carrasquillo was charged on 19 counts, including rape, aggravated assault and unlawful contact with a minor. He's also being charged for indecent assault on a 16-year-old the same day. According to police, Carrasquillo groped a 16-year-old girl in her school only an hour before raping the 11-year-old child. Investigators say he may be tied to a third, recent assault on a woman.

DNA test results came back as a positive match with the rape suspect, according to an NBC 10 source. Investigators already had evidence tying Carrasquillo to the assault, including surveillance video and sunglasses found at the scene of the crime. They were waiting on the DNA results to move ahead and formally charge him.

Carrasquillo followed the 11-year-old victim as she dropped her younger sister off a daycare and then headed off to school, according to police. That's when the suspect forced her, at gunpoint, to walk with him to a filthy alley where he raped her with such force she had to undergo surgery.

Police canvassed the neighborhood with a sketch of Carrasquillo the next day and within half an hour, a group of guys spotted him. The suspect was taken down in a fit of street justice. He was beaten so badly he spent two days in the hospital before he was released, still in his hospital gown, into police custody Thursday.

The two vigilante "heroes" who led the charge split $11,500 in reward money and were honored by police and the victim's family. The little girl's family said she was having a tough time sleeping and her dad said he would like to move out of Kensington because he thinks it would help his daughter heal, emotionally.
