Clothespin Artist Creating New Statue

The giant clothespin statue in Center City Philadelphia is about to have some competition.

The same artist is creating a statue of an oversized paintbrush, for a plaza planned at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

The 53-foot-high paintbrush will be poised in the air, as if in the act of painting. A giant dollop of paint will rest on the plaza below.

“Philadelphia has a distinguished history as a leader in public art…” said David R. Brigham, PAFA’s President and CEO. “Collecting such important artists in depth helps to set Philadelphia apart as an international cultural destination.”

The artist is Claes Oldenburg, who created the 45-foot high Clothespin statue installed in 1976, west of City Hall on Market Street. Another of his works is the Split Button, on display at the University of Pennsylvania.

The new paintbrush statue should be completed by next spring on Cherry Street, between Broad Street and 15th Street.
