3-Alarm Fire on Atlantic City Pier Under Control

10 companies and more than 80 firefighters responded to the blaze

Officials say a three-alarm fire on the boardwalk in Atlantic City has been declared under control.

Deputy police Chief Joseph Nolan said the fire broke out around 6:45p.m. Saturday at the Central Pier on the Boardwalk and was brought under control at 10:40p.m. That's the site of several retail stores.  A pizza shop, T-shirt shop and clothing store were affected by the blaze.

Thick black smoke was billowing out of the pier on the beach side of the boardwalk, between St. James Place and Tennessee Avenue.

Wind blew the smoke out over the ocean.

Officials said a police officer who was coughing heavily was taken to the hospital, and no other injuries were reported.

At least 10 companies and more than 80 firefighters responded to the blaze.
