Officials Confirm 1st Case of Zika Virus in Delaware

The Division of Public Health(DPH) confirmed the first case of the Zika virus in Delaware. The DPH announced Tuesday that a Delaware woman tested positive for the virus and suffered a mild illness. Officials say the case is travel-related and pregnancy is not an issue.

Zika is a generally mild illness that is currently widespread in Central and South America as well as the Caribbean. The virus is spread through mosquito bites and common symptoms are a fever, rash, joint pain and red eyes. These symptoms are normally mild however and only last a few days to a week.  However, the most serious threat from the virus is a birth defect in the babies of mothers who contracted the disease.
