Organizers of Pennsylvania's first breast milk bank say they're pumped up by the initial donations received over the weekend.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports three donations of 2,300 ounces of pumped breast milk have arrived at the Three Rivers Mothers' Milk Bank.
The milk is intended primary for infants in neonatal intensive care units, but up to 20 percent of it could be given to outpatient babies, too. The milk is especially important to premature babies, who are prone to the kinds of infections that breast milk helps prevent.
Denise O'Connor, a lactation consultant who serves as the bank's executive director, says the bank "is taking off."
The milk will be distributed after the bank passes an inspection on Dec. 7 to 8 by the Human Milk Banking Association of North America.
