In 1978, a research specialist at the Wistar Institute decided to respond to a help-wanted ad from a Philadelphia organ procurement organization seeking a transplant coordinator.
He got the job.
Thirty-six years later, Howard Nathan is still with the same organization — now serving as president and CEO of Gift of Life Donor Program .
Gift of Life is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. Under Nathan's leadership during the past thee decades, the nonprofit has evolved into the nation's most successful organ-procurement organization.
Last year, it coordinated 1,228 organ transplants from 447 donors. The donor figure represented a one-year record among all 58 organ-procurement organizations in the United States.
