Infant Home After Brain Surgery

A five-week old baby is back home in western Pennsylvania after having life-saving surgery at Boston Children's Hospital to correct a brain defect.
 
Jen and Kevin Sheridan, of Upper Yoder Township, say their son, Owen, was diagnosed with the problem 14 weeks into her pregnancy. Their son had a condition that caused part of his brain to grow outside his skull, which resulting a seven-pound growth that had to be removed.

The baby was born by C-section at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown near their home, about 60 miles east of Pittsburgh. The baby was then taken to Boston for the surgery on Jan. 3.
 
Mark Proctor, a neurosurgeon in Boston, says the baby still has a "long road ahead" but is gratified his parents are able to hold, cuddle and feed him normally.
