Abington, Jefferson to Sign Letter of Intent to Merge

Thomas Jefferson University, Jefferson Health System and Abington Health signed a letter of intent Wednesday afternoon to merge, a marriage that would create the region's largest health care provider.

The combined entity would have five hospitals and a geographically disperse network of ambulatory-care centers in southeastern Pennsylvania and South Jersey. Last year, those health centers collectively handled more than 84,000 hospital admissions, 1.1 million outpatient visits and nearly 249,000 emergency room visits.

Jefferson is the parent company for Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Methodist Hospital and Jefferson Hospital for Neuroscience — all in Philadelphia. It also includes Thomas Jefferson University and its Sidney Kimmel Medical College.

Abington Health is the parent for Abington Memorial Hospital and Lansdale Hospital — both in Montgomery County.  Read the full story.
