10 Ways to be a Better Neighbor

A caring community makes life better for everyone. And it can make all the difference for neighbors who want to remain independent in their own homes as they grow older.

So take a few minutes and check in on your elderly or homebound neighbors during the cold weather!

We looked to the Philadelphia Corporation for Aging for some ways to make those person-to-person connections.

A little help goes a long way:

  • Pay a regular visit to older and disabled neighbors who live alone: Check their thermostats to see that their home is warm enough and check that they are dressed warmly enough and have enough to eat and drink
  • Make a friendly phone call
  • Offer a ride
  • Help with grocery shopping
  • Cook a meal
  • Shovel snow
  • Help with caulking, installing storm windows or other weatherization
  • Change a hard-to-reach light bulb
  • Change batteries in smoke detectors
  • Refer them to the PCA Helpline at 215-765-9040 if  they are in need of information or assistance or call the Helpline yourself if you are concerned about a senior who may need help
