Elevated Levels of Lead, Arsenic Found in New Jersey Soil: Report

The city of Vineland is dealing with its third significant environmental issue in as many years.

The Press of Atlantic City reports recent tests on residences near the former site of an arsenic-based pesticides manufacturer showed elevated levels of lead and arsenic in surface soils.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is testing to determine how far the materials spread from the former Kil-Tone Company plant on Chestnut Avenue. The agency conducted sediment, flood plain and surface-water sampling along Tarklin Branch, which leads to the Maurice River.

EPA officials are concerned the hazardous materials may have made it as far south as Union Lake in Millville.

Beginning in 2009, the federal government spent about $125 million to stop arsenic from the Vineland Chemical site from flowing into nearby Blackwater Branch.
