Closing Time for Wildwood Bars: Never?

Wildwood considers 24-hour bars

Wildwood bar-goers may be able to drink round the clock during tourist season.

The Wildwood City Commission discussed an idea to keep bars open 24 hours a day in a recent meeting, instead of extending closing time to just 4 a.m., according to Press of Atlantic City.

Mayor Gary DeMarzo and Commissioner Edward Harshaw told Press of AC they don’t think extending closing time an hour would make a difference.

The point of keeping bars open 24 hours is to eliminate what bar manager John Davis calls the “bar break.” It’s that time after all the bars close and people pour out into the streets. Extending closing time to 4 would just push back the bar break an hour.

“This would alleviate the mass exodus,” Davis said about keeping the bars open. He suggested 24-hour service just during an extended tourist season -- May to October.

Not everyone supports this proposal.

“I don’t want to see the bars open late,” resident Larry Lillo told Press of AC. “All we’re doing is giving more alcohol to people who don’t need more alcohol.”

A public hearing on the ordinance is scheduled for July 28 at 6:30 p.m.
