Virgin America Set to Fly Out of Philly

The trendy airline will begin service between Philadelphia and California in early April

Air travel from Philadelphia just got a lot more trendy. Starting April 4, California-based Virgin America will begin nonstop service from Philly to Los Angeles and San Francisco. The airline will offer introductory fares between Philadelphia and California starting at $129 each way.

Since its debut four years ago, Virgin America has won multiple awards for their custom-designed cabins, wireless internet and entertainment options (known as RED). Among the included amenities, each seat includes a 9-inch-wide touchscreen that offers 18 Dish Network channels, along with 25 on-demand movies that you can control just like your DVR (pause, rewind, etc.). Also included are interactive games, seat-to-seat chats and premium food options.

"This is exciting news for the citizens of Philadelphia and the region as our great Airport scores another home run for us," said Mayor Michael A. Nutter in a press release. "Virgin America will join the Airport family offering new service to the West Coast, while stimulating our regional economy and expanding the choices for our travelers. I congratulate Virgin America for recognizing the value of doing business in our great city."

The announcement was first shared with Virgin America’s Facebook fans Tuesday, via a video that spotted the beloved "Greenman" from the FX television show “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” near a Virgin America aircraft. To coincide with the service launching, there is also a Facebook sweepstakes where fans can enter for a chance to win roundtrip flights and the ultimate “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” fan pack on the Virgin page.

“In addition to being a historic and vibrant city, this market has strong business and leisure travel connections to California – and we thank both Mayor Nutter and Philadelphia International Airport officials for welcoming our new service,” said Virgin America President and Chief Executive Officer David Cush.
