TD Glitch: Convenience, Eh?

Blame Canada! Blame Canada!

While some improvements have been made in the TD Bank computer-glitch debacle, customers lined up at area branches Friday, trying to get money from accounts that are still not updating in real time.

Bank spokeswoman Rebecca Acevedo says the transactions on the online accounts are current through the end of business Thursday.

However, customers who get direct deposit on Friday -- a pay day for many -- were out of luck. “I was expecting a $1,500 paycheck and I went to the ATM and it says $3.95,” said Darryl Cox of Mount Airy, who was visiting the City Avenue branch of TD Bank Friday. “I had to go address that issue and they said everything would be good today…But if you pay bills or if you’re trying to pay bills, right now you’re in bad shape.”

The problem with the bank’s computer system began Monday after the Canada-based bank, which took over the Jersey-based Commerce Bank, converted the two systems into one.

Many bank branches were giving out $200 to some suffering customers Friday morning, in order to “hold them over.” Andre Branison, who said he’s been waiting for his disability check to post for days, was one of those people.

“My car insurance is due, my bills are due -- I need my check,” said Branison, who was at the TD Bank Branch on City Avenue before his dialysis appointment. “What the heck is $200 going to do? That won’t pay my car insurance.”

The bank says customer accounts should not appear to be overdrawn to vendors. However, the bank will waive any fees if they
do.

“Sometimes improvements or bigger takeovers aren’t the best thing,” said Cox. “I like the smaller banks. I like Commerce better."
