Savings at the Pump

Feeling the pain at the pump?  According to AAA, the current national average for a gallon of regular unleaded is $3.65. That is up about seven cents from a week ago.

But even as prices rise, there are ways to save. MSNBC’s Life Inc. provides some great ways to help you this summer.

At CVS, ExtraCare Rewards members who spend at least $30 on specially marked items, will receive a $10 gas coupon on the back of their receipt. You have 30 days to redeem it right inside the store for a gas card that you can use at Exxon/Mobil, Shell, BP Amoco or BP Arco. The eligible items change weekly and there is a limit of one card per week.

Just eating your morning cereal can also reap rewards. Mail-in 10 UPCs from Kellogg’s cereals and receive a $10 debit MasterCard. You do have to mail the UPCs in with this download able form. The deal ends on December 31, 2011 and there is a limit of five cards per household.

Need any batteries? When you buy Energizer Ultimate or Advanced Lithium batteries, you can receive a $10 gas reward card by collecting two codes. The money is loaded onto a Discover debit card.

Wal-Mart is cutting its gas prices by 10 cents until September 30 for customers using a Wal-Mart gift card, Wal-Mart MoneyCard or a Wal-Mart credit card.

Besides shopping, here are three other tips we like for lowering your fuel costs this summer:

  • Fill up at an unbranded gas station where prices are often cheaper.
  • Research prices. There are multiple apps for smart phones, as well as multiple websites, including automotive.com, FuelMeUp.com, and GasBuddy.com, that show the cheapest prices in your area.
  • Pay cash. Certain stations offer a discount to cash-paying customers.
