SEPTA IT Head Recalls Hectic Day of Pope Pass Failure

On July 20, Bill Zebroski, SEPTA's senior director of information technology, was having bad day at the office.

The e-commerce website for Philadelphia's public transportation authority crashed trying to sell Regional Rail weekend passes for Pope Francis' visit to the city in September.

The site was overwhelmed with over 54,000 unique visits in the first minutes of sales — 64,000 virtual shopping cars filled with 293,000 tickets and items from the website. Every chair in Zebroski's conference room was filled with consultants trying to keep the infrastructure intact.
