World Meeting of Families More Than Halfway Toward Its 10K Volunteer Goal

Organizers for the World Meeting of Families and Pope Francis’ visit are halfway toward reaching their volunteer sign-up goal.

This event will be huge — about 2 million people from more than 150 countries will come to Philadelphia — and requires 10,000 volunteers. As of Wednesday, about 5,176 are qualified to volunteer, not including corporate volunteers. About 2,800 volunteers have signed up to work events. There are at least 19 volunteers who are 80 years old or older.

Of the more than 5,000 volunteers, about 2,000 are from Pennsylvania, the most of out any state. Volunteers are coming from all over the country; there are about 111 registered voters from Texas alone, according to a spokeswoman.
