Is the Litterbug Philly's Mascot?

Off the top of my head I can think of three iconic symbols/mascots/things that form the core of Philadelphia. There might be more, that is up for argument. But for my purpose here I have the three main ones:

  1. The Phanatic;
  2. The guy who wanders around dressed as Ben Franklin (I think someone still does that);
  3. and the Litterbug.

Now the Phanatic is the most famous, but the Litterbug is the most effective.

I’ve visited a lot of cities around the world and I don’t think one of them can hold a candle to the amount of garbage and other crap that decorate Philly’s streets, curbs and vacant lots.

The Litterbug should be on top of City Hall not William Penn, whom I’m sure -- even with the primitive sanitation and trash collection of his day -- is rolling over in his grave, sickened (if old bones can be sickened) by the litter in his city... Read more about this story on PBJ.com.
