Comcast-Time Warner Cable Deal Failure May Have Been Inevitable

Even Comcast saw that this was possibly coming.

No one watching the deal closely seemed too surprised by the collapse of Comcast’s acquisition of Time Warner Cable, which was announced Friday morning. Comcast CEO Brian L. Roberts said in a statement that the company “structured this deal so that if the government didn’t agree, we could walk away.”

The Federal Communications Commission was prepared to drown the deal in hearings, while the Department of Justice was prepared to sue the deal to its death. Instead of dealing with the headache, Comcast simply decided to walk away — and with the luxury of no breakup fee.
