Beach Business Extends Beyond Labor Day

Labor Day may have passed, but that doesn't mean the end of beach business this year along Delaware's coast.

Beach towns have worked for years to extend their season with jazz festivals and other events to draw visitors into October.

Carol Everhart of the Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce tells The News Journal the busiest days for Delaware's beaches are July and August. After that, September and October draw the most visitors -- more people than in May and June.

Travel was expected to be high for Labor Day weekend, based on estimates from AAA. But officials say it's too soon to say how beach communities fared this summer. Early reports suggest retail sales were somewhat sluggish, while hotels, restaurants and rentals fared well.
