Virtua Sues New Jersey to Block New EMS Law

Virtua and Capital Health System filed a lawsuit Monday against the state of New Jersey seeking to block the recently approved emergency medical services law that allows Cooper University Hospital to take over the delivery of advanced life support services in the city of Camden.

Virtua, based in Marlton, N.J., had been providing such services for all of Camden and Burlington counties for the past 38 years after being awarded a certificate of need to do some from the state.

The controversial legislation signed into law earlier this month gives hospitals with level-1 trauma center the exclusive rights to develop and maintain advanced life support services in the municipality where the trauma center is located.
