Pennsylvania Appeals Court Blocks Cargo Airport Construction

A Pennsylvania appeals court has upheld a judge's ruling that blocks construction of a long-planned international cargo airport near the Pocono Mountains.

The Commonwealth Court's decision Thursday echoed a Schuylkill County judge's ruling that the county zoning hearing board was wrong to approve the project.

They said the 4,300-acre property's owners didn't clearly demonstrate the airport would have enough parking or ample roadway access and didn't have a required state aviation license.

The case wound up in court after East Union Township and a cable company appealed the zoning hearing board's decision. The cable company argued the airport would interfere with nearby transmission equipment.

Thursday's ruling is the latest setback for a project that's been debated for a decade.

Property owners Gladstone Partners can appeal to the state Supreme Court.
