Woman in Wheelchair Victim of Multiple Hit-and-Run Drivers

All three vehicles fled the scene, police say

A 58-year-old woman in a wheelchair was killed Tuesday night in Wilmington, the victim of multiple hit-and-run drivers.

The initial crash happened around 6:35 p.m. on the 1000 block of S Market Street (Route 13), according to Delaware State Police.

The woman, later identified as Edith McFarland, was trying to cross the street when a gold SUV traveling southbound on Route 13 hit her, cops said.

McFarland, who was ejected from her chair when she was struck by the SUV, was then hit by two other vehicles, according to authorities.

All three cars fled the scene, police said.

The victim was apparently staying at the nearby Fairview Inn after checking in last Thursday, an employee at the motel said.

The roadway was closed for more than two hours as authorities investigated.

Anyone with information on any of the drivers should call 302-834-2620 Ext. 275 or Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333.
