Deadly Crash Shuts Down White Horse Pike

Route 30 traffic stops after a head-on collision near Atlantic City Airport

One person was killed in a two-car crash involving a car and SUV along the White Horse Pike in Galloway Township Thursday morning.

The head-on wreck, which involved an 2011 Chevy Tahoe driven by Chief Darren Dooley of the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office, happened shortly after 9:30 a.m. at Route 30 near Avenue A -- near Atlantic City International Airport, according to Galloway Township Police.

Police responded to the scene after receiving a call about an erratic driver in a 2003 Pontiac Sunfire headed eastbound on the White Horse. At some point the Sunfire appeared to have crossed the center lane and struck the Tahoe causing the SUV to overturn, police said.

The driver of the Sunfire was pronounced dead on the scene. Police identified her as Vanessa English, 25, of Galloway Township.

Dooley, an 18-year veteran of the ACPO, was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City, police said. He is currently in stable condition with no life threatening injuries.

Both directions of Route 30 were closed between Xanthus and Rosemary Avenues, according to NBC40.

Chopper10 arrived on the scene around 10:30 a.m. to find an overturned SUV and badly wrecked sedan with a tarp over top of it. A wheel from one of the vehicles also appeared to be in the roadway.

The roadway was still closed as of noon. It was open again by 2:30 p.m., police said.

Galloway Township and New Jersey State Police were investigating the crash.
