My husband has worked at Valero over the past 22years through the Carpenters Local 626. What a great way to start the holiday season. While we are generally able to handle when he is laid off, they should of given these men and women some time before they just came in and told them to leave. We were under the impression that the scheduled shutdown starting next week would only last roughly 60 days. My husband was tossed out on the streets today as well, by Valero...he is a union worker for a contractor in there. My husband IS college educated, thank you. Also the unions make you go to school with them as well, more education then you have ever seen yourselves. As &quot;regular&quot; people, you get paid holidays, PTO, little perks here and there...union employees do NOT get paid holidays and days off. No work NO pay. My husband was laid off 6 months this year already, and according to the state we fell below the 250% poverty line. We do NOT qualify for any help, welfare tid bits, or anything else because he is employed by a union even if laid off...so you pay your mortgage, food, car and daily normal expenses on unemployment. Get a life, an education, and a brain cell before you down play unions. Keep buying your Wal-Mart goodies from China and Taiwan and see where we are in a year. It's the non union greedy business men making millions, not YOU or Union workers. Get a CLUE, America was for sale years ago by YOU the SELLER and has been bought. Not only did he lose his job today, but he had the displeasure of telling many others that they no longer had jobs. Not only is my husband an educated man, but he is extremely skilled! While some Unions have issues and are corrupt, not all are. Some of the hardest working people I know work for Locals.
