Tractor-Trailer Overturns on Pa. Turnpike Ramp

Big rig wreck causes backups on parts of roadway in Montgomery County

A tractor-trailer overturned as it drove from the Valley Forge Interchange toll plaza onto the Pennsylvania Turnpike Friday morning, according to dispatchers.

As the big rig went around the curve it overturned and landed on the off-ramp from the westbound Turnpike. Chopper 10 captured the cab on one side of the barricade while most of the trailer rested on the other side.

The driver, Stephen Andriso, was alert but trapped for almost two hours after crashing around 7:15 a.m. He was airlifted to the Hospital at the University of Pennsylvania with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Chopper 10 showed dozens of firefighters and emergency responders working to free the driver. As of 9 a.m., both directions of the ramp remained blocked as crews worked to clear the scene.

Expect delays in the area.

A little before 10 a.m. one lane on the ramp coming off the highway was able to get by crash. By 11 the off-ramp lane was closed as the truck was righted and taken away.

At 11:30 a.m. -- more than four hours after the crash -- the roadway was reopened.

The ramp from the eastbound side of the roadway remained opened.

Police say he was hauling 40 pallets of a powdery substance called Gistex that is used in sodas and some foods.
