New Year's Day Murder Victim ID'd as Temple Student

Man, 23, was a senior in Temple business school

One of the victims of a violent start to 2013 was a Temple University student.

Temple spokesman Ray Betzner says the shooting happened during an altercation at an off-campus party Tuesday, a few blocks from Temple's medical school in North Philadelphia. He says the student killed was 23-year-old Stephen Johnson, a senior at the business school.

Police arrested and charged Lawrence Jeffries, 22, of Glenside, Pa. with murder and related charges, according to court documents.

Police say a second victim was also shot and remains in critical condition, and a third person jumped from a window and was also injured; neither was a Temple student.

Investigators and school officials didn't know what started the deadly argument.

Johnson was one of four people killed in the early hours of New Year’s Day. A teen was shot and killed in West Philly, a man was shot in Frankford and a man was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver on City Avenue.
