Phillies Land Sweeney to Fill Void at 1st

Mariners trade Sweeney to Phillies

The Phillies have found a stopgap to play first base with their “Big Piece” on the mend.

On Wednesday the Mariners traded veteran first baseman and designated hitter Mike Sweeney to the Phillies for a player to be named later or cash considerations, the Phillies said.

Sweeney can fill in at first base and give the Phillies a power bat while slugger Ryan Howard recovers from an ankle injury that landed him on the disabled list Tuesday.

Seattle first activated Sweeney from the disabled list then made the deal of one of their clubhouse leaders.

The five-time American League All-Star has six homers and 18 RBI with a .263 average in 110 plat appearances this season. He is a career .298 batter with 213 long balls and 901 RBI in 16 seasons mostly with Kansas City.

It wasn't clear who the Phillies would let go to make room for Sweeney.
