Car Fire, Multi-Car Crash Snarls Route 1 Traffic

What started as a car fire in the northbound lanes of the Roosevelt Boulevard in East Falls wound up as a multi-vehicle wreck that landed a child and adult in the hospital and snarled traffic in both directions of one of Philly’s major roads.

It all started around 9:15 p.m. along U.S. Route 1 near the Wissahickon Avenue exit when a car caught fire in the northbound lanes.

No injuries were reported from the blaze but while firefighters were on their way to extinguish the blaze when the scene became more dramatic.

Apparently two cars that were slowing down in the southbound lanes got into a wreck.

A five year old and a 28 year old were hurt in the ensuing crash, authorities said.

Both were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, according to officials.

The Boulevard was closed for about an hour after the crash. By 10 p.m. some cars were getting by on the shoulder and by 10:15 all lanes were open again.
