Firefighters Battle Heat, Flames in Port Richmond

Firefighters battle more than just the flames to bring fire under control

Firefighters in the Port Richmond section of Philadelphia were battling more than just the flames after a fire broke out at a warehouse Friday night.

The fire broke out around just before 9:30 at a building under construction at 3330 N Delaware Avenue. It would take about an hour for the flames to be put under control.

After breaking out, the blaze quickly spread to two alarms as about 75 firefighters battled not only the flames but also 95-degree heat.

"It's very hot -- we have a lot of gear on," said Battalion Chief Anthony Hudgins as sweat beaded on his face. "We're trained for this -- it's emergency services and that's what we do. We don't think about the heat right now we get the job done."

Of course firefighters had a secret weapon.

"We just make sure to keep ourselves hydrated," Hudgins said.

No injuries or evacuations were reported.

It’s unclear what company occupies the building.
