Philadelphia Officers Hurt as SUV Slams Into Tree Near Airport

Two Philadelphia Police officers suffered injuries after a sport utility driven by a 12th District officer crashed into a tree head-on near Philadelphia International Airport.

Both airbags deployed during the crash along Bartram Avenue near Essington Avenue in Southwest Philadelphia around 2 a.m. Tuesday that left the SUV with front-end damage and injured the crime-fighting partners.

The driver, who is in his late 30s, was rushed to Presbyterian Hospital in stable with injuries to his neck and back. A female officer, who is in her early 40s, sitting in the front seat suffered a broken leg, said police.

What caused the police SUV to go out of control remained unclear early Tuesday. Investigators said they hoped to use surveillance from businesses in the industrial area to determine what led to the wreck.
