Prosecutors say officer opened fire after armed man refused to put down his weapon

An Ocean County police officer shot and killed an armed man outside a sports bar Thursday night, according to county Prosecutor Marlene Lynch Ford.

The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office says Beachwood Police Sgt. Bruce Harris was on patrol around 10:50 p.m. when he spotted Mark Tanouye, 52, allegedly making a disturbance in the High Velocity Sports Bar parking lot.

Here are details care of a release from Lynch Ford.

Sgt. Harris exited his marked patrol vehicle and approached Mr. Tanouye. Mr. Tanouye was in possession of a small caliber handgun. Sgt. Harris gave Mr. Tanouye repeated commands to drop his weapon. Mr. Tanouye did not follow those commands. Sgt. Harris discharged his service weapon once, fatally injuring Mr. Tanouye. Sgt. Harris was not injured.

Authorities placed Sgt. Harris on administrative leave pending an investigation, which is routine after a police shooting.
