A teenage boy is in the hospital after a hit and run accident in Delaware County.
Investigators say the 14-year-old Havertown resident was returning home with two of his friends Friday night around 10:30 p.m. Suddenly, police say he was struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Township Line Road and Bryan Street in Upper Darby.
"The vehicle sent him 25 to 30 feet into the air," said Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood. "The operator of the vehicle after striking the kid never stopped to aid the kid. We've got witnesses who saw him get out of his car and check the front for any damage. He never went back to check the kid. He continued driving down Agnew to the next street, made a right and then went up an alley way."
The victim is a freshman at Haverford High School, according to his friends. The boy is currently in critical condition and a medically-induced coma at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
"He's in serious condition," said Chitwood. "He's got significant head injuries and internal injuries."
Chitwood said the boy is going to make it, Philly.com reported.
Police describe the suspect as a white male, 30 to 40 years of age. He was last seen wearing a red shirt and dark pants. Investigators believe he was driving a dark SUV with tinted windows. They also believe the SUV has front end damage and may be missing a headlight.
Witnesses said the driver got out at Agnew Drive to check out the damage and then continued to flee.
"Our hope is to get this guy off the street and get him high bail," said Chitwood. "You can bet that he was either drunk or high on drugs or doesn't have a driver's license."
